What is

Trauma?

Trauma is a psychic wound that hardens you psychologically then interferes with your ability to grow and develop. It pains you and now you’re acting out of pain. It induces fear and now you’re acting out of fear. Trauma is not what happens to you, it’s what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.

What is Trauma Informed Law?

Trauma Informed Law is a response to a legal system that has become indifferent to people. It is a response to a lack of humanity in the law.

Specializing in areas of law that affect people on a human level – child custody, divorce, criminal defense. At TIL we seek to aid professionals within the legal system and legal clients by enabling their process with a trauma informed approach. By cultivating an environment of unconditional listening, compassion and understanding, we find many of our consultations lead to resolutions outside the court.

Trauma Informed Law seeks to integrate knowledge about trauma into best practices and processes, to create the best legal outcomes for our clients.

Image Big Impact

Trauma Informed Law realizes the widespread impact of human trauma and seeks to mitigate the impact it has on our clients' legal outcomes.

Trauma Informed Law seeks to proactively avoid traumatizing our clients further.

Trauma informed law pinpoints and understands the symptoms of trauma in clients, families and in other legal staff.

ACES and
Incarceration

Trauma is particularly debilitating and has long-term effects on a child’s developing brain. Referred to as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), these experiences are common across all sectors of society.
Trauma exposure and trauma associated psychopathology are associated with increased likelihood of arrest and incarceration in adulthood.

“People hurt other people the same way they were hurt.”

For many trauma survivors the decision to turn their life around begins with an attorney.
However, even after making the decision to change they still face a legal system that isolates, shames, and punishes. Sadly, most trauma survivors have already endured isolation, shame and punishment throughout their lifetime.

“The abused becomes
the abuser.”

When a person experiences trauma, he or she may feel unsafe, betrayed, or have difficulty trusting others. This can lead to heightened emotions, like anger or aggression, or a tendency toward shame, numbing, and isolation. Within the context of the legal system, this can negatively impact the bond between a client and their lawyer, and a client’s engagement with the law.

What does experiencing
childhood trauma
mean for adults?

Adults who experienced trauma struggle to respond appropriately to situations that would otherwise appear normal and nonthreatening. This can lead to what appear to be unreasonable reactions to perceived threats by the trauma survivor. In a court of law, these unreasonable reactions create a damaging first-impression that needs to be corrected by the trauma informed attorney.
